What is Wood Pallet Chipper?

This chipper converts various wood materials, such as lumber, boards, pallets, boxes, and blocks, into wood chips. It is commonly used in wood pellet mills, biomass fuel processing plants, furniture factories, and various wood product processing plants. For example, when our Australian client came to us to purchase and build a complete wood pellet plant, their raw materials were locally recycled waste pallets, wooden formwork from construction sites, and wood scraps. The wood processing equipment we provided was a wood pallet shredder. A wood pallet chipper, also known as a pallet chipper or drum chipper, is a highly efficient machine that quickly reduces large volumes of wood into uniform wood chips. It utilizes an advanced drum chipper design, using high-speed rotating blades to cut irregular wood into standard-sized chips or coarse fragments.

A pallet chipper is not only used in a variety of industries, including wood recycling, board processing, and biomass energy, but can also serve as a core front-end device in wood processing lines. Wood Pallet Chipper: Working Principle & Structure

The wood pallet shredder is incredibly powerful. RICHI’s technical department selected the finest materials to ensure long-term, stable operation. The chipper’s performance was optimized and refined through extensive testing with various raw materials and numerous solutions. The result is a highly cost-effective and practical chipper.

Working principle of Wood Pallet Chipper

Wood pallet shredder machine is a heavy-duty chipping equipment that cuts large pieces of wood raw materials such as wooden pallets, logs, wooden strips, templates, etc. into 20-40mm standard wood chips through high-speed rotating knife rollers.

Its main working process is as follows:

  1. Raw materials (such as scrap wood pallets, planks, and furniture scraps) enter the machine’s feed port via a belt conveyor or manual loading. The machine is equipped with a hydraulic or electric feed roller system to prevent slippage and skipping before entering the crushing chamber, ensuring continuous and stable feeding.
  2. Once in the crushing chamber, the wood is repeatedly impacted, split, and sheared by hammers or blades driven by the high-speed rotating main shaft. This process resembles a “large-scale mincer,” easily processing even pallets with nails.
  3. The shredded wood chips are carried by airflow or centrifugal force to the screen area at the bottom of the machine. Screens with different apertures control the final output size (e.g., 30mm, 50mm, 80mm, etc.), allowing for flexible selection based on different downstream applications.
  4. If the crushed material is excessive or hard, the system automatically adjusts the cutter head speed or reverses the rotation to prevent blockage and extend the life of the cutter heads. Some models also feature hydraulic automatic clearance for quick maintenance.
  5. Wood chips that have reached the specified size are uniformly discharged from the discharge port and can be directly transported via a belt conveyor to a storage silo, collection truck, or subsequent equipment (such as a rotary dryer machine or biomass pellet mill), facilitating integrated production.

The entire chipper is composed of several main parts, each of which has its own function to ensure the efficient and safe operation of the equipment:

Double-Layered Feed Roller System

Upper and lower feed rollers clamp the wood, ensuring smooth and even feeding of materials such as pallets and boards into the crushing chamber, preventing slippage and rebound.

High-Strength Crushing Rotor

This core component, equipped with multiple sets of wear-resistant hammers, uses high-speed rotation to crush the wood, delivering high efficiency and durability.

Replaceable Screen System

A screen at the bottom controls the discharge size. Unqualified wood chips are crushed until they meet the required size before being discharged.

Hydraulic Opening Mechanism

This allows for quick access to the cover, enabling convenient maintenance, hammer replacement, and material removal, reducing downtime.

Reinforced Liner Structure

A high-strength liner in the crushing chamber effectively protects the equipment from impact wear caused by nail-laden wood and hardwood.

Electronic Safety System

Equipped with an intelligent electrical control cabinet, it features overload protection, automatic alarms, and emergency shutdown functions, ensuring safe and reliable operation.

What wood materials can the wood chipper machine process? I have a lot of scrap pallets, boxes, and branches. I wonder if it can be used with this equipment?

Wood pallet shredder is very suitable for a wide range of applications, including the scrap pallets and boxes you mentioned, as well as branches, logs, wood strips, building formwork, and furniture scraps.

Is the chip size fixed? I need 20-40mm chips for biomass pellets. Can this be accommodated?

The chip size is not fixed and is primarily controlled by the equipment’s screen. The screen aperture is typically customizable within the 20-40mm range, which is just right for your biomass pellet needs. If you require other sizes, the screen can be adjusted to meet your specific needs, providing great flexibility.

There may be nails in the scrap pallets I’m processing. Will this damage the cutting tool or cause the equipment to jam?

Don’t worry. The equipment features nail-resistant cutters specifically designed for nail-containing boards, reducing wear on the cutters. It also features an automatic hydraulic feed system that automatically adjusts the clamping force based on the material size, preventing jamming, slipping, or backing out. This ensures stable operation even when processing nail-containing wood.

What is its processing efficiency? For example, how many tons of wood can it process per hour? Is it suitable for small and medium-sized factories like ours?

The capacity of the wood chipper mill varies depending on the model, ranging from small and medium-sized to large. For example, in actual projects, some can process 2-3 tons per hour (such as a furniture factory project in Vietnam) and some can process 5-6 tons per hour (such as a sawmill project in Brazil). Small and medium-sized factories can find a suitable model, and the selection can be based on your production needs.
