A wood chip pellet machine is a device that compresses wood chips, sawdust, and other wood waste into small cylindrical pellets. The finished pellets typically have a diameter of 6–12 millimeters and a length of approximately 2–3 centimeters.

Ring die pellet machines use a large ring-shaped mold design, offering high output and suitability for factory production and commercial operations. The resulting wood pellets can be used for boiler combustion, heating, or power generation, being more environmentally friendly than coal and more convenient than burning firewood.

How does a wood pellet machine work?

Transfer the materials to the pelletizing room through the adjustable feeder. The wood pellets are finally formed under the strong extrusion between the ring die and the press rollers. Then cut into the desired length by the cutter. Changing the ring die can adjust the diameter size of the final wood pellets.

The cooled pellets are hard, durable, and easy to store. They can be used directly, offer high combustion efficiency, and are convenient to transport, making them suitable for industrial boilers, home heating, or biomass power generation.

We already know that wood chip pellet maker is a machine that presses wood, logs, sawdust, and other materials into 6-12mm wood pellets. Then what does it consist of? I will introduce you the main parts of the wood pellet machine below.

Anti-caking bin

The wood chips are light, poorly flowing and caked easily. Considering that, we designed the unique bin: Anti-caking bin. This ensures that you can feed the wood chips smoothly, and prevent the wood chips from caking.

The wood pellet will are also equipped with a protection device to reduce the damage of the machine, and prolong the service life of the wood pellet machine.

Forced feeder

The feeder can convey the wood chips to the inside of the pelletizing chamber. We know that the wood chips are light, so it is difficult to enter the pelletizing chamber, so they need to be pushed into the pelletizing chamber through a forced feeder. So we equip a force feeder with the pellet mill for wood pellets, to make the pelletizing process normal working. It can ensure the wood chips to enter the pelletizing chamber smoothly.

The wood chips are extruded into wood pellets through the pressure between the ring die and rollers in the pelletizing chamber. 

 One thing to note is that the pelletizing chamber has requirements for fineness and moisture content of wood chips. So wood chips need to be crushed to a fineness of 2-3mm, and dried to a moisture content of about 15% in order to make wood pellet.

The ring die and roller are made of 304 stainless steel, and can avoid contamination of raw materials due to equipment corrosion. The mold of the ring die can be changed according to your need to produce different size of the wood pellets.

Wood raw materials are first conveyed to the wood chipper via a screw conveyor for initial size reduction. Large wood pieces are processed into uniform chips, which are then smoothly transferred to the next crushing section for further processing.

After chipping, the wood chips are delivered to the wood hammer mill through a screw conveyor. In this stage, the material is crushed into fine and uniform particles suitable for efficient drying and subsequent pelletizing.

After crushing, the material is transported by an air conveying system into a storage bin for temporary buffering before drying. The material then enters the dryer through a conveyor, where excess moisture is removed to reach the required level before being sent to the next process.

Once dried, the material is conveyed to the pelletizing section by screw conveyors. It is fed evenly through a frequency-controlled feeder into the pellet mill, where it is compressed into pellets. The formed pellets are then transferred by conveyor into a storage bin before entering the next stage.

The hot pellets from the storage bin are conveyed into the pellet cooler through a customized conveyor. Since newly pressed pellets have high temperature and moisture, this process cools them down to ambient temperature, ensuring pellet strength and stability for storage and handling.

What raw materials can my wood chip pellet machine use? Can it only use wood chips?

Of course, not just wood chips; the range of usable raw materials is actually very wide.

Basically, any woody or biomass material can be used to make pellets, such as sawdust, wood shavings, bark, wood chips, furniture factory scraps, waste wood pallets, branches, wood scraps, etc. In addition, some customers also mix in agricultural and forestry waste such as rice husks, straw, and peanut shells, which can also be processed into pellets normally.

In actual projects, very few people use only “pure wood chips.” More customers mix wood waste from different sources, which not only reduces raw material costs but also improves raw material utilization. As long as the materials are properly crushed and the moisture content is adjusted, solid, uniformly shaped pellets can be produced.

Simply put, any woody or biomass material that can be crushed and contains fiber has the potential to be made into pellets. Don’t overcomplicate the raw materials; many waste materials that were originally considered garbage can actually be transformed into valuable fuel or products through a pellet machine.

I’ve seen some pellets in our country that are very hard, while others crumble easily when squeezed. Why is that?

Simply put, the firmness of the pellets depends mainly on three factors:

First is the moisture content of the raw materials. If the raw materials are too dry, they won’t form easily during pressing, resulting in weak and brittle pellets; if the raw materials are too wet, they won’t bind well, and will also fall apart after cooling. With the right moisture content, the pellets will naturally be firm and hard.

Second is the degree of compaction by the mold. The greater the pressure exerted by the mold on the raw materials, the more tightly the pellets are compressed, and the harder they will be; insufficient pressure will result in softer pellets. This is why pellets produced by different equipment and molds have different textures.

Third is the type of raw material itself. Generally, pellets made from hardwood are firmer, while those made from softwood are slightly softer. Using a mixture of different wood chips usually results in pellets with a hardness level somewhere in between.

The simplest way to check is to squeeze them firmly with your fingers. If they don’t crumble, it means the pellet quality is normal; if they fall apart with a light touch, it’s likely that the raw material moisture content or the pelletizing process wasn’t properly adjusted.
